The incidence of cancer is forecast to increase by 2% per year. Soon it is expected that one in two of us, if born after 1960, will develop cancer in our lifetime.

As the incidence of cancer is forecast to increase, so too is the number of referrals to Velindre Cancer Centre. By 2025 we forecast to see an 18% increase in referrals along with a 48% increase in demand for our radiotherapy machines.

The current Velindre Cancer Centre site is approximately 3.69 hectares and it is ‘land locked’. This means that we do not have the necessary space to allow us to expand in future to provide treatment for the number of patients we expect to see.

This option was considered however the nature of the building does not lend itself to the construction of a 21st Century healthcare facility.  Alternatively, the northern meadow site will improve access to the new Velindre Cancer Centre for a significant number of patients of which, approximately 75% come from areas outside of Cardiff.

We expect to stop providing services at the current Velindre Cancer Centre towards the end of 2022.  At this point we expect all of our services to be provided at the new Velindre Cancer Centre.  We will then decommission the site and expect to have completed this, and be off the site in 2024.

No. During 2017 we will submit our final business cases to the Welsh Government and our Local Health Board partners, seeking approval to develop the various projects.  These include the new Velindre Cancer Centre, a radiotherapy satellite centre and chemotherapy outreach centres.  We expect to have a decision from our partners by the end of 2017.

The preferred site is land, referred to locally as the northern meadows, located approximately 0.5 miles north east of the current Velindre Cancer Centre.

The new Velindre Cancer Centre is planned to open in 2022.

We expect construction of some new roads to commence in 2019 and construction of the new Velindre Cancer Centre to commence in early 2020.

We evaluated a number of options for the new Velindre Cancer Centre which included (i). land – referred to locally as the northern meadows –  located approximately 0.5 miles north east of the current Velindre Cancer Centre and (2) land adjacent to Whitchurch Hospital.

Site 1 is our preferred option and is approximately 7.83 hectares as it provides better access for patients and a unique environment for a cancer centre.
